I am on a constant search for comfortable golf shoes that will make your walk more enjoyable on the course. Recently I have been wearing a pair of shoes that I believe are the best value in golf right now. They are the Skechers Go Golf Drive 2.
You will be hard-pressed to find a better combination of comfort and performance at this price level ($80). Let's find out why these shoes were such an unexpectedly pleasant surprise.
Comfort First
Skechers has not been traditionally known as a golf shoe company. They have built up an empire based on lifestyle footwear that is comfortable. A few years ago they decided to take a stab at the golf industry, and you have most likely seen their main spokesman Matt Kuchar with a few dry-witted humor commercials.
In a way, Kuchar is the perfect embodiment of this shoe. He's not a flashy player, but he gets the job done and racks up top-10 finishes almost every week.
Looking at the Skechers Go Golf Drive 2 shoes, nobody is going to say this is a fashionable shoe. The style is pretty muted, and some might call them a bit boring. If you are looking to wow your playing partners with fresh kicks, this is probably not the golf shoe for you.
However, when I put them on for the first time something became abundantly clear - these are easily some of the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn...period. The cushioning is pretty incredible, and you will feel like you are walking around on a pillow. This is definitely the main selling feature of this shoe, which for golfers who walk the course, is pretty important.
They Perform On the Course Too...
The Skechers Go Golf Drive 2 model that I have is a spikeless shoe. I've worn many other offerings in the industry from FootJoy, Puma, TRUE Linkswear, and several other brands. On the whole, you can't expect too much out of a spikeless shoe in terms of traction.
I would say that these shoes offer relatively the same amount as other brands in that category. It's adequate, but if you are looking for a spiked shoe then you should check out their Go Golf Pro model.
In terms of stability, I would describe them as adequate as well. The FootJoy Pro SL probably would be a better choice for you if that was your main consideration for a shoe (you can read my review here).
One thing that was a nice surprise was their ability to block water out of the shoe. I played several rounds in early morning dew, which sometimes can soak my socks after several holes. My feet were completely dry, which speaks to the quality of the build and materials they used. Additionally, they offer wide versions of almost every size which is great for people like myself. I would say the fit is mostly true to size, but you can expect much more room out of the wider model.
The main story on this shoe is the comfort. When you walk the course in the Skechers Go Golf Drive 2 you can immediately tell they are more comfortable than almost any other shoe out there. By the end of the round, your feet will be in better shape, which I believe is an advantage for players who generally walk the course.
The Best Value in Golf Right Now
I was able to snag the Skechers Go Golf Drive 2 for $61 on Amazon. That is absolutely crazy for a shoe that's this good. The last time I spent that little on a golf shoe I had to call my wife to bring me a bunch of bandaids and a different pair of shoes when I reached the 10th hole. Usually, you get what you pay for, but these shoes are a surprising exception.
Generally, they sell for around $80, but depending on the size and color you choose you can get them for even less. They might not be the prettiest shoes out there, but you'll pay more if you want style too. There is not a golf shoe on the market right now that will deliver you better overall performance at this price level.
